Adding multiple characters to a storyboard

Step-by-step guide to creating multi-character scenes in Boords

Written by Karen Mc Guinness

Boords allows you to place multiple characters in a single scene, making your storyboards more dynamic and engaging. Multi-character scenes are useful anywhere you need to show people interacting, like conversations, group activities, or everyday scenarios.

Every character keeps a consistent appearance across frames, so your storyboard remains clear and cohesive throughout.

Adding Multiple Characters to a Scene

Open the storyboard you're working on and switch to Generator View.

On the frame, select Generate Image.

Choose your image style and shot type (e.g. close-up, medium, or wide).

Add characters to your shot. There are various ways to do so 👇

1. Select "Create character" to create a new character in the Playground

Describe the character's appearance in detail. For example:

Choose an image style and select Generate.

When the character has generated, you can then choose whether to add them to your storyboard, save them to Assets to use at a later point, or reword the prompt to create a variation of the character.

2. Upload a reference image to turn an existing design into a reusable character

Select Upload image to add your own character as a reference.

3. Select a pre-created character

Boords also offers some ready-made characters that you can choose from.

Select one or more characters to include in your shot.

In the shot description, describe what you want the characters to do or how they should interact. Click Generate to create the image.

If you’re happy with the result, click Save to add the generated image to the frame. Otherwise, click Discard and try again.

Defining Character Interactions

Character placement and interactions are determined by your prompt. The clearer your description, the better the result will be.

Examples:

  • These two characters greeting each other on the street.

  • This group gathered around a bonfire.

  • These people walking together in the forest.

Multi-character scenes make your storyboards more expressive and realistic. By combining consistent characters with natural interactions, you can quickly build frames that tell the full story and keep your projects visually cohesive.
